I just bought a used Snapper of the same vintage model 3311X5S. The model number I have stamped on my B&S engine are as follows:

Model: 253707
Type: 0206-01
Code: 86022010

I need to do some work on my engine as well. It also surges a bit and the drive system needs some tic I will let you know what I figure out.

The code on a Briggs says a lot (for the engine if the shroud and engine are original) code= 86 is 1986, 02 is Feb, 20 is the day of the month in Feb of 1986, 10 is the assmbly facility. As far as the mower you probably already know 33=cutting width, 11=HP of engine, X=Extra tough series, i.e., threaded tie rods, bearings in the transaxle instead of bushings, etc.

so no one knows then ...

The choke rod should go here and as the throttle cable extends you should see a tab pass through that area to pull the choke rod.
