I bought an older Snapper SR1230 Rear engine mower, and it ran okay for a year. This spring, on my first mow of the year, I had a problem with the clutch cable being so loose that I could barely stop when I put the pedal down.
I tightened up the cable at both the front and rear until I thought I had a good tension, and began mowing again. It worked okay for a few minutes, then began to make a god-awful racket, and while I tried to drive it to the concrete to check it out, it just stopped moving.
When I lifted it up, I found that the clutch cable had snapped, and the rubber around the drive disc had chunks missing from it. (I guess this was the noise I was hearing).
My question is two fold:
1) Is this something that my average repair skills can fix, or should I suck up my pride and frugal nature and take it to a small engine repair place?
2) If I can fix this, does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get the best deal on the parts? I've got a new baby boy, and he's sucking up our money pretty quickly.
