Snapper Comet HV Ignition Issue

Have No Power To Plug.Mower is old.I Cleaned the Rust Off Of The Flywheel And coil.Replaced it to original position.Still no spark.Switch is no and all safety systems are in Off Or Park Or Disengaged.Is it common for the coil of an 11 Horse Briggs to go bad?If not.....any suggestions?Any info would be appreciated.Thanx.

Since you didn't post model numbers I am assuming non point engine. Remove the blower housing and disconnect the wire attached to the ignition module, and crank the engine with a known good plug. If no spark replace the module. If you have spark, then there is a short some place in the kill wire, between the ignition module, and the key switch. It is not that common for the module to go bad, but sometimes they do. Just make sure that you are not getting 12v to the wire coming off the module. If you have 12v most likely the key switch is bad, and battery power to the module will cook it immediately.

Where throttle cable connects to engine there is a 5/16 nut with 2-3 wires attatched. Loosen the 5/16 nut remove the wire going back under engine blower housing (black). with spark tester or a new plug ck for spark. Blue is good, yellow or no spark remove blower housing and replace igtion coil.(Magneto) with B&S. tear off the box top and use it to set gap between coil and flywheel or 0.017". REmove any heavy rust, paint from the magnet on the flywheel. some rust is ok. If coil is bad ignition switch is a commen place power and ground to meet. bad igtion swithch can fail and send 12 volts to coil damaging it. On 11hp snapper maybe pull start only, would not worry unless electric start. If electric i would change ign switch and ck all fire for shorts.

Briggs ignition modules are set at .010-.014, and the color of the spark has no reference to condition. You have fire or you don't, and ignore color. Some engines will only have yellow fire even when new.

I would like to see the model, type, and code for the engine so I can narrow down my options.

IN TEXAS WE OWN AND PRODUCE OR OWN MAGNETISM. If the rest of the U.S. lost magnetism we would still have ours, kinda like our power grid. :laughing:. Ignition systems work in theory? A 30 yr old snapper with dirt,grass and oil built up under the blower housing, 105 degree Texas summer day with ten thousands gap and yellowish spark is gonna end badly. When engine starts the heat from the engine is gonna make things bigger and gaps are gonna close and colide or ground out. ILENGINE is 100% correct in that is what the service manaul says. (in theory) diff parts of the world factors in too. Color of spark has no relevance, ultra violet is the hottest and we can not see it then what if ign coil spark is clear NOW WHAT? I am new to these forums and just joking and poking MST with a stick. Always learning sumthin new! :laughing:

Replaced coil.Engine started on first pull.I pulled so hard that I did a cartwheel{While saying Hell Yeah!} across my back yard when I lost resistance on the pull cord.You guys rokk!May a cooler full of your favorite beer show up at your door and beautifull lady in need squeeze your butt cheeks!!!Thanks again guys.Oh yeah,..you two stop splitt'n hairs.

Poke all you want, I know what you are getting at. Have seen more than one case where cleaning the rust of the flywheel magnets will allow an engine to fire where it didn't fire before, even though Briggs says rust on flywheel won't effect ignition. 15 years professional experience, and one of only two MST's in the state of Illinois to past the oid paper test on the first attempt without going to the Briggs school first.

Interesting. In my 40+ years I have "never" seen rust on a FW prevent spark. Rust will not block/shield magnetisim.

Have seen 30-40 pushmower engines over the years, that wouldn't fire. Remove blower housing, wire brush magnet on flywheel, reinstalled blower housing and start mower. Don't have a clue, because like you said rust doesn't effect magnetic fields.
