Silver Series Rear Wheel Self-Propelled Problems (Model 10302)

I have a late '90's Silver Series model 10302 with rear wheel self propelled. Late last summer, the mower started coming to a sudden stop when I let up on the drive bail and when moving it free wheel, a loud clicking sound can be heard coming from the drive area. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Have you greased the rear wheel drive gears? There's a fitting on each side.

Yes, I typically do that after every other mow.

Ok. I would take it apart to see if there's any obvious defects. Good luck.

Here's the latest. I tore down the left side and found no visual defects and then the right side. I then took the whole drive system out and opened up the gear box to find the lube/grease quite dry. This was the first time this unit had been opened up in 15 years, I know this cause I bought it brand new. I cleaned up all the gears and they all seem to be working find.

Next question, what type of grease/lube should be in this gear box?

On the newer models "mine is 10685 mod. I stats to use lithium greas.
