Short block - how to obtain?

It has been recommended on this forum, and apparently by my repair person, that resolving my smoking Briggs Inteck V-twin 24hp (on Husqvarna YTH2448) would be best remedied by replacing the short block as opposed to just going after the rings. Apparently one side gets a lot hotter and the piston may have some play in the cylinder?

Currently waiting on the quote for this: I've tried looking these things up online to see what they are but none of the parts stores seem to see them (or at least not mine). Something I'm not looking up properly? Really nervious about the cost and would like to get a handle on what's involved.

Thanks....

In your case I would not do a short block. The short block for your engine, 698172, list for $790. The recommended replacement engine 44Q777-3137 list for $850, and you would have a new 2 year warranty covering all engine components, that are not customer caused failures, as compared to a 1 year warranty on the short block that would cover the short block only.

Haven't you had anyone check the head gaskets on the original engine?

Repair guy is not of the opinon that it is the head gasket although I don't know if he did the requisite test(s). He took the plugs out and rotated the topat the top a few times. Nothing was really dismantled and no diagnostic testers (compression or otherwise) were hooked up. Seemed to have a lot of experience but... I would like to know how I can have head gasket verified, direct dismantle and inspection?

Take both valve covers off, and start the tractor and run it low speed, the side with the blown gasket will spray compression and oil everywhere, the side that isn't blown will just drip oil on the ground.
