I have a snapper 281022be that I changed both axle boots and afterwards shifting into 2, 3, 4 and 5 is impossible. I changed the boots by removing the left fender and the problem started after that. I know something is binding because when I remove the bolts from the left fender it works properly. I am working on this without someone to help me, so I can’t see what is happening. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am missing? I disconnected the shifter and tried moving the chain case. The chain case does not move smoothly.

i now have the left fender off, disconnected the shifter and cleaned and regressed the axle. The chain case moves freely until I push the axle towards the front of the mower. This is what happens when putting the fender back on and tightening it. When pushing up on it the rubber friction disc is shoved against the drive disc, preventing the chain case to move. The mower worked perfectly before, so I don’t understand how this happened. I am now soaking the set screws on the drive disc so I can move it.

Fixed! I finally noticed that shift arm that goes into the main case wasn’t I the hole. Everything is working perfectly now.

Glad to hear she is running.

Don't cheap out like I did on the rear boots. I bought some gray plastic like boots for my RER. Lasted like 2 months till they cracked. Recommend buying OEM Snapper real deal rubber black boots.

What type of grease did you use? Snapper 00 grade is what goes in the chain case and diff. Don't use typical number 2 bearing grease.
