After looking at the broken spring again, I removed the handle grip and slid the new spring down the shifting rod where the broken spring was. From there it kind of fit into place. The small hook on the spring end hooks to the mounting plate and the large hooked end snaps around the shifting rod itself. The spring can be insalled upside down so if it doesn't make sense flip it over and try it again.
