I've got a 6X4 feet wooden shed in my back garden that has been there since the house was built in the early 1980's... So yeah, the wood is a bit... Shall we say, decrepit!
Inside, it is mostly OK, the three roof beams are in great condition, so much so I think they may have been replaced recently, but everything else is original, and it shows!
The strength is mostly there, but they do look old.
The worst bit about the interior is under the window, the sill is really badly pitted, about 1" down!
Luckily I have tonnes (probably literally) of all different shapes and sizes of wood, so I'll find a bit that will slot in, and secure it with a few nails one day. But the pitting isn't something that will cause the building to collapse, just looks bad and gives spiders a good home! Which I do not want!
Right, exterior...
Oh dear! The oak paint is fading badly, expecially at the bottom where it was covered with snow in winter (we didn't live here in winter, but we did live 3 miles away, so I know the snow was bad), and a few of the upright beams are coming away. That is a simple "bang a few nails in" job though, that I'll do soon.
The major stuff is the main (wide) beams, they are badly rotted.
If I left it as it is, I'd give the beams about 4-5 years before they started to collapse one by one, then slowly the whole thing would go, but if I treat it, it may last up to 15 years!
I'll buy some dark oak varnish, and wood preserver.
First of all I'll give it a good few coats of the preserver, then a few coats of varnish, to give it a good finish, and seal the preserver in.
As for the inside, I'll paint the unsightly bits of wood with matt white paint I have, and that'll be fine.
Don't know why I posted this really, I guess I thought somebody would be interested!
Anybody else here restoring their wooden shed ?
Or need advice ? If so, I can help! Restoring rotting wood is one thing I know about.
