I have a question; this is a bit unusual, and is for a different lawn based project I'm making, but does anyone have any input or help to where I could make/mod a stock self propelled mower transmission to go in reverse simply by changing something inside of that black gearbox? I've never seen any self propelled mower transmissions with reverse, which is making this process a little harder than I thought. Normally a cable actuates the drive mechanism to only go forward, but I'm wanting to get the axle to spin in both forward and reverse.

I appreciate any help and input offered!

Thank you.

The reversible self propel lawnmower post one immediate safety issue . Imagine the lawnmower run back to the person who have to back up or risking possible injure to the foot or body. Mechanically not only the gear box but the wheel driving gear with one direction ratchet fly wheel need to modify . All involve professional design and tooling. My initial thinking is combine two Craftsman 21" mower deck one FWD and one RWD weld together so it can have two independent transmissions still holding a Briggs & Stratton long shaft engine two pulleys two drive belts with proper height adjustment two control cables. Then the only issue is how to make which transmission probably FWR to go backwards? This can be a real fun project.

I don't know about changing gears in the gearbox, but I just read something very interesting in one of my old snapper brochures from the early '70s. Or maybe even very late '60s. Those old walk-behinds had a reverse setting on the self-propel selector. I've never seen one but I have an idea how it might work. As u lower the speed of the drive by moving the lever down which moves the rubber drive wheel toward the center of the flat drive disc, it stops just shy of dead center of the disc. If the clever could move a little farther, moving the rubber drive wheel across the center point of the drive disc and over to the other side (so the rubber drive wheel would now be spinning in the opposite direction) wouldn't that power the unit in reverse? I'm no engineer and I may be overlooking something very basic but that thought occurred to me. I guess this would only apply to snapper but u may consider it. Hope that helps some.

Out of curiosity, what sort of contraption are you building? You said it's for a lawn based project. Is it something other than a lawn mower?
