We have one huge box elder tree about 200 feet from our house, and because it provides a lot of shade for part of our lawn we leave it standing. The disadvantage is it is a magnet for the crop of box elder bugs that appear every fall. Our house siding and deck stain are a light beige color, and squashing the insects makes qite a mess. And I hate to use chemical sprays because they damage both the siding and deck stain. The best method I have found to rid them from the exterior of our house it to use a powerful shop vacuum with a 2 1/2 inch hose, just connect several wands together and make a game of how many bugs you can suck up before one manages to evade the wand tip. Got up to 58 today lol
