I picked this unit up from a neighbor down the street for $40.00.
It had not run in sometime and had been left outside to rot.
It needed 2 rear tires, a new chain, and a new carb. The gas tank
was very hard to get clean and the carb. was full of dried gas slug.
The Tecumseh 10 HP was in shape but the plastic cooling fins were
shot. I found one on ebay and replaced it. It fired up with the new carb.
and ran very well with no smoke. I replaced the blade today and mounted
the deck. I took it out to the front yard and used it to mower the grass for
the first time. It run great and cut well. I thank the forum for all the help.

Yes it was made by Murray for sears. I have not been able to find the year or even a picture
of another one like mine. I have an ad of one from the 60's. (502.256172) See below.
Anyone have one of these?
Thanks

Very cool! It's always nice to see an old "junker" brought back to life. Good job.

Nice little rig. I just brought one home that looks almost exactly like yours except mine is a 7/25. It's sending gas through (the plug is getting wet), but I'm not getting any spark. You mentioned yours had a plastic fan. Is this one that sits on top of the engine to cool it? I'm trying to put a date to mine and the cooling fan on mine is totally cast metal, not plastic. Perhaps older than yours? Who knows? Anyway, take care of your baby. Jim.

I have seen a picture of a 5/25. Does yours have a Briggs or Tecumseh motor? Electric start?
If electric, you can use vise grips to hold the spark plug to block and see if there is spark.
The same for manual, but harder to pull and see at the same time. I have spare plugs to try.
Mine had a small problem yesterday and it was the starter was almost off! Need to check those
bolts for tightness!! Good luck with yours. Send a pic when you can. Go to www.partstree.com
and look up motor. It will show you where the points are located.
