I have owned this lawn tractor since August 29, 2001. I personally haven't serviced, what the manual refers to as "Adjusting Brakes (Gear)". The manual has 3 types of brake adjustments Adjusting Brakes (Gear), Adjusting Brakes (Automatic Hand Control) and Adjusting Brakes (Automatic Foot Control). When I look at the left side of the transmission (hydrostatic), I don't see anything that looks like the illustration in the manual. I don't see pads or a disk. Can anyone help me with identifying the gear brake unit and components as well as how to check for wear and perform maintenance? Does the hydrostatic model have a different braking mechanism than what is shown in the manual?

Some of the hydrostats have an internal wet disc brake.

Here is the parts diagram for your hydro https://tufftorq.ordertree.com/model?modelId=897&brandCode=TTQ

Have to click on assembly and hit parts to get the diagram

Thanks for the information. I had a feeling that it was internal since I couldn't see a brake disc externally as shown in the manual.
Do you know if there's any maintenance required for this braking system?

Really no maintenance on that style of brake. From the diagram doesn't even look adjustable.
