You don't say what engine you have, but engaging the pto put an instant load on the engine, which throws the throttle butterfly to full open and there isn't enough fuel available for that sudden load and it will stutter, and in some cases I have seen it kill the engine. that is the reason some engines also have an accelerator pump build into the engine. You could also be having other issues but without engine information it is just guessing.
