On this older 72" (STT-29DFI-SS) model, the customer had no E brake at all. I'd never done one, but I could see what the problem was. The bolt that holds the brake strap was broken off. My first thought was to drill it out, since there was nothing to grab onto. So with my small starter bit, I started drilling. And just as I touched the bit to the broken bolt, it spun. It spun backwards about 1/4 turn. But still spun. This told me the bolt was loose. So with a punch, I just tapped the edge of it lightly and turned it little by little with each tap, until there was enough to grab with my fingers.
The local hardware store had the exact #8 bolts to replace the broken ones with.

How friggin lucky was that. My luck don't usually get this good. This and the spindle rebuilds (thanks to you guys) made this a very profitable job. Kind of rejuvenated me.

Thanks everyone for all your great information and advise on this sight.
