The first year dealer put a starter on under warranty. It would just click 4 or 5 times before starter would start motor. That new starter did the same thing 2yrs later. I just put up with it until this year. I pulled it off carried it to a starter shop it was full of dirt they cleaned it and installed new solenoid. They said i needed to do something about dirt getting in it . I checked and there is no way. Hope some one can help with this problem.

Two things I would be checking with this problem. First, what size battery do you have n this unit? With an engine that large you need a battery with at least 350CCA. Second, check all connections in the starting circuit. I’d be looking for a loose, dirty or bad connection, particularly in the negative side. I can’t count the number of times I’ve found the problem to be a bad connection where the battery cable connects to the chassis or the where to solenoid is grounded to the chassis.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY Rivets i have that size battery and did check all the starting circuits. The starter will work fine for one mowing season before it starts acting up. I just started using it for this year and its working fine for now but i just had it worked on. The starter was loaded with dirt when i pulled it.

Jim, I have several scags no starter problems, I found one thing that really helps is when you go to start it put it in the choke position, keeping your had on the level (Maybe Half throttle) when you turn the key soon as you hear it was to start pull it off of choke, if it has to turn much pull the choke back to open, might take a little practice but cuts of on starter wear and saves batter life,
