SCAG Engine Replacement

I have a SCAG STC 61 23BV (D1200244) with a Vanguard 23 38677 0122-E1 motor. I bought the mower "used" a few years back. I do not believe the previous owner(s) took very good care of it because I have had to deal with engine and electrical problems (mainly minor issues, but still costly) since taking ownership. The most recent problem however, appears to be major - perhaps a valve or piston? Due to the history of problems I feel it is time to replace the mower, but I am considering the possibility of just replacing the engine. A few questions I have (1) Do I need to find an exact replacement engine to what is already in it or will a different brand be an option? (2) If a different brand is an option, can I increase the horsepower? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

You can up the horsepower if you want. the most important thing is the crankshaft length and diameter. After that the main things would be wiring changes and most likely a new exhaust system.
