Scag diesel alternator good not charging

If the alternator is good but not charging, the issue could be with the **voltage regulator**, wiring connections, or a blown fuse. Start by checking the wiring for loose connections or corrosion, and make sure the belt driving the alternator is tight. If everything looks fine, test the voltage regulator, as it's a common failure point. Replacing it might solve the charging problem.

How did you determine the alternator is good?

Where is the main charge wire from the alternator connected, the large one?

The basic system requires, the switch completes the charge excite circuit, and the voltage regulator works.

Ideally, you need a manual to troubleshoot these kinds of problems. Silver bullets often misfire.

I cant find the voltage regulator physically or on the electrical schematic had the alternator tested at a place that repairs them. Old man in a old shop im sure he knew what he was doing

Would not hurt to have the model of Scag the OP is working on so we could look it up.

Can you clue us in on what exactly you are working on, A model and engine size would be helpful to sort this out maybe.

Having trouble with my crystal ball this week.

Tnx for the model and serial. In this case I can't help as I don't have an account with Caterpillar so they won't let me look up the engine.

I called holt caterpillar in Fort Worth Texas. What’s happening is cat says I need to call scag and scag says I need to call cat. The scag dealers all say they don’t work on the diesels. This issue originated over 5 years ago and I bought a Ferris mower. I want to sell the scag so I want to get everything in top condition which I have done. Only 420 hours on this machine. New parts every where. Just cant seem to solve this issue. Thank You for trying.

From what I can tell on Manual Lib in a diagram there is a control module on the gauge pack area and there is an inline 20A fuse. Locate that fuse and make sure it is not blown. Jump start will blow fuses on many machines.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. It sounds like both companies are avoiding their responsibilities to the equipment owners and the service techs, much like the Chinese equipment manufactures.

We are left to figure out what wrong with no help from either one. Some of us makes them look good by repairing the problems without their help.

In this case it does appear the alternator has a built-in voltage regulator so does need a trigger voltage to operate so make with the 50 amp charging fuse is good too. According the original IPL it is a 50 amp circuit breaker but later they claimed it was replaced by a 50 amp fuse. I don't know it is an auto reset breaker or an once tripped it has to be replaced version.

There is continuity through that 50 amp. Have not found a bad fuse yet.
