Just purchased this mower. If I stop mowing for any reason, the exhaust will burn a patch of grass ,a dry ed up spot about 10", where mower was stoped. Has anyone else experienced this ? Called dealer still waiting to hear back.
Thanks

I just purchased a RZT S and have the burns too...guess we need to be faster...

This is not RIGHT its apparent that there is a design flaw. I called Cub Cadet and they also said go FASTER ! iAM SURE THAT CUB CADET CAN REDIRECT THE FLOW OF EXHAUST !!!!! :frown:

Totally a design issue. I looked at other RZT (not S) and they shoot out sideways, not angled. my neighbor has a 1000 tractor and that too goes sideways.
Also the manual says slow down/stop before a zero turn. Which i did, and now have a perfect set of arched burn patches down the side of my lawn.
So yesterday, I went fast, almost reckless and watered twice. Lets see if they show up today.

Wonder how bad it will be in the dry summer months.

lastly blew 4 fuses...have a problem with a short in the PTO waiting on a call back from service.

How did this thing get rated a "best buy"?????

Well you guys have convinced me I dodged a bullet when I bought my used Country Clipper!

Just sent pictures, of lawn, to dealer, he is going to contact Cub Cadet and see if they can figure something out. That is a good question how did it get such high ratings???? I will post again when I hear back from dealer.

Quick fix until you get an answer is put a medal pipe elbow on the exhaust .
My power washer used to burn the grass until I unbolted the exhaust and pointed it straight up in the air .

So just had the mover picked up for service on the PTO clutch (they have seen the short one other time). As for the exhust, we took a closer look. The directional piece screwed to the muffler (looks like a disk) seems to mounted too far clockwise, points to 5 o'clock. The interesting part is the assembler (factory) could have mounted it to 3-4 o'clock. The screw missed the proper screw holes. Why else would there be holes to move it more to 3-4 o'clock. I told the service guys and they should rotate it for me. This has to be a problem with the guy in the factory not mounting that disk properly. I'll let you know if that is the case when Ihear back from my dealer...

The service department rotated the plate my mower to the 3 o'clock position, but it still burn the grass when going slow, also when I use the flushing system on deck. Its like the exhaust hits the shields and frame just enough to channel some hot exhaust to ground.

wow, mine must be really bad compared to yours. Anytime I do a zero turn, at a pretty good speed, I get a nice dead C a few days later. 3 o'clock has to be better, maybe even 1-2...Cub Cadet has to address this problem.

I have the same problem on my RZT S 42. Dealer want to turn at 3oclok the muffler deflector.
Do anyone had other solutions proposed by dealer or Cub Cadet?

I looked at this mower yesterday and the exhaust was going out the right side at three oclock. Can't see how that can burn the grass. Did they make a correction on that? My main concern with this mower is the Kohler Courage engine, read a lot of bad stuff about this engine. The small rear tires bother me also. I'm afraid on my yard of a rough ride. Otherwise it's very comforable. I just got on the seat and tilted the wheel down and thought this would be a fun drive. It's way more comfortable than my Simplicity Regent. I guess I'll keep watching how everybody is doing with this mower.

when you say you make a turn at "speed".... are you sure the tire is not causing your "C" ? Sorry if this sounds obvious and I did not mean to ask a silly question. But I have never been able to make a turn at "speed" without the inside tire tearing turf.

I have been working with dealer that I bought my RZT S from, he called Thursday 6-14, and advised Cub has a kit to fix , Burning Grass Problem. He said that it should be in his hands by Monday and will be out to install. Will let all know if this will fix problem.

I just bought an RZT S 42". I love this thing but it is also burning my grass. I thought it was a leak causing the burn, but after reading this forum I see it could be the exhaust. Did rotating the exhaust to 3 o'clock fix your problem?

My RTZ S also burns the grass. Has anybody found a fix for this problem yet. Got my RTZ S 2 weeks ago and have several brown spots in my yard. There is also a brown stripe about 4" wide about 48" from my chain link fence. It's has been very dry & hot here, is this a problem with grass that is lush and green.

I looked at the exhaust of my RZT S last night, it has one discharge pointed at a 45 degree angle to the grass. I am going to rig a small diverter plate that will extend the heat shield to make the hot air go more horizontal instead of towards the grass tonight. I will add my results tomorrow (if is stops raining).

I worked on my exhaust last night. I attached 3 pictures to explain. I first removed the lower black heat shield (3/8" socket). There is a picture with the exhaust discharge pointing to 4 o'clock, this orientation misses the heat shield and points right to the grass. The last picture shows that I unbolted the discharge, rotated it to 8 o'clock and reattached (1/4" socket, the upper 2 bolts are hard to get to, I had a small ratchet that worked well). After I reinstalled the heat shield and started the motor the exhaust gets dispersed a lot better and goes more horizontal. I feel sure this will fix the burning of the grass. When I used the deck washing port last week and ran the blades while applying the water I parked in one spot. This burned the grass the worst since I sat there so long. The only downfall I see is this change will probably burn the yellow paint off the yellow rear bumper, I can live with that!

My RZT S 50 has the same issue. I contacted the dealer and they said they were aware of it and they should have a fix by mid July. I just contacted them and they said it will be the end of August before they may have a fix. Their advise was the "not stop" or "mow faster" I thought I bought a lawn mower not a race car. I'm not very happy with their responses. I love the mower otherwise. I would expect more when I spend over $3000. My only other option is to see if I can return it and get a different brand.

I have cut the grass 4 times since I redirected the exhaust. It is not burning the grass anymore. What I notice now is the rear tire tearing the grass on the sharp turns. After about a week that spot will turn brown. I have been trying to make sure I turn the steering wheel all the way to make the rear tire go in reverse instead of pivoting which appears to be the problem. I will update later.

I posted a complaint on the cub website about not having a fix for this yet. They said they are working on an exhaust shield and that I would have to wait. When I asked them what they were going to do about the dead spots in my grass they offered free pickup and delivery. If customer service is what gets people to keep coming back I am going to have a hard time going back. I know of one person already that has been discouraged from buying this machine because of what they have seen it do to my grass. I'm not trying to make idle threats just stating a fact that he didn't buy this mower because of this. I would think they would want to do a little more to keep the customers happy.

Good to hear that your fix worked. I have the same issues with turning tight turns around my trees. I found if I slow way down the tires don't tear the grass but on the other hand I guess I burn it with the exhaust.

All of you folks with this tractor, please be careful! A couple of years ago I rented a tractor that (I didn't realize) exhausted down into the grass. I got hung up and was pulling the tractor free when I saw the first flames. Burned almost a 1/2 acre of grass (and the mower) before five fire engines and a hand crew put it out. This was the beginning of May, about 75 deg., in green grass that I don't think I could have gotten to burn with a cigarette lighter. I was lucky that (mostly) all that burned was grass. You don't want to lose your house or your neighbor's.

As discovered in this thread(good research, BTW) many ZTR's that are sold without a heat shield between the muffler and the ground will pose this problem when sitting in one spot too long. And as ponted out it's not necessarily the direction of the muffler's exhaust pipe. I should include examining for that that little "feature" whenever recommending ZTR's to those users that are actively shopping for one. I, for one, would not hesitate to tell a dealer that if he wanted to sell me that specific ZTR(and it didn't have a heat shield) he would add one at no charge before I left the dealership with it. And I believe almost every reputable manufacurer of ZTR's will have a heat shield kit that will work on any of their ZTR's(see related thread below regarding Ariens/Gravely ZTR's that also had that problem):

When I called MTD about the problem, technical support advised that only the dealer could obtain this under warranty. I was not about to pay for something that was a design flaw on a machine that was only a few weeks old. My dealer ordered the kit under warranty at no cost to them (or me) and yours should do the same.

Once the kit arrived, I picked it up and installed it myself.

Good luck!!
