Just had the Carb rebuilt, new fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel filter
mower wouldnt start for 4 days, tried every day until the battery dies. tend to back fire or not fire at all. I took out the plug , turned the engine over and there was spark. Put the plug back in and it would backfire. Took plug back out and no spark. I assumed it was fowled. bought a new plug and it still wouldnt start. Finally, 2 days ago it happened to start right up, I let it idle for about 15 minutes and shut i down. Wouldnt start for another 2 days. I finally got it running again and jumped right on and started mowing, it ran geat for 10 minutes and BOOM!! backfired out of the muffler, Bogged down and died. An hour later It started with some efffort. I proceeded to mow for the next 2 hrs without an issue. After mowing I parked it in the garage.....Now im on day 3 of it not starting again. It either back fires or does nothing at all............It ran great for a couple days after I had all the repair work done to it but now it's back to its same old problems.
just hopng for any suggestions, I was tempted to buy a $50 coil toight just because. Ive gotten to the point where I want to start replacing things until the problem goes away......or talk to sart people that have educated ideas.... Im curious to know more about the flywheel key issue. Theres many times when I try to start it That the flywheel just turns about 1/2 inch and stops, need to let off the key and try again. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it to turn over. Maybe that has nothing to do with it?
Also, Whats involved in checking the valves? Rather, how deep do I have to dig to find out for sure. I currently have the valve cover bolts removed, just havnt actually popped it off
A sheared flywheel key will cause back firing, or firing at the wrong time. I suspect valves, more so the hydraulic lifters. If you have little mechanical experience, I suggest that you not tackle this problem. You could look at this website, it has the Kohler service manual for you engine.
