Rooting hormone for cuttings?

A neighbor gave me a cutting of a plant they can't identify but smells great. She said that if I put it in water with a "rooting hormone" it would root and then I could plant it. She had no idea what it was called. I don't think she meant the word hormone. Does anyone know what I need to add to the water to make it root?

It is a rooting hormone, they sell it in garden supply stores. It stimulates the roots to grow, hence it being called rooting hormone.

This tells you how to do it yourself.

And I thought she was just a forgetful old lady. Thanks for the link, that is actually very helpful. The cutting died though so I'm going to have to get it first and then go back over for another.
