I am trying to restore a 24 inch Lawn Boy that has been in the family since 1965. Does anyone know if the deck is Al or mag? Also any suggestion on where to get parts other than ebay? A short block, P/N 678271 would be really handy! Thanks

What you have there is the business end of Lawn Boy Loafer (riding mower). Do you have the rider powered unit 9213 that fastens behind it?
I am very sure that it has the mag deck and <MAGNESIUM> should be cast in smaller type in the casting on top of the deck just above the larger type PLACE FOOT HERE WHEN STARTING. At least that it is that way on mag decks of my 1962 - 7252, 1964-7253, 1969 - 5238, 1973- 3058 and 1974 -5023. Look closely it's not very large type.
I just got new NOS short block in the box a couple of weeks ago, but I'm going to hang on to it. There has been one on ebay for $199.00 but I didn't want one that bad. Let me know if you see that <MAGNESIUM> mark on yours.

Thanks for the reply. No where on the deck does it say magnesium. It doesn't even have "Place foot here when starting". Everything I've read says it should be mag but I cannot find the word in the casting. We've got a metal analyzer at work I'll check it with.

This unit was never sold with the loafer. The lawn boy shop that originally sold it put brackets on the deck and sold it as a push mower.

I saw the short block you mentioned on ebay also but now it says the part number is 678072 and I'm not sure how that compares. I'm also a little leery because it says it needs to be disassembled. I've got a lot of components that I could build one with but unsure of my ability to assemble it correctly!

If you come across another one keep me in mind.

If you decide to tackle this project this manual might help in the future. https://lookup3.toro.com/ttcGateway/acrobat/manuals/lball.html

Thanks for the info. I have been relying on those documents and without them I wouldn't have a chance!!
