Hi Everyone,
Grabbed an old 8241 ae from my dads barn. Has not been mowing for 25 plus years. It looks ugly but appears to be in good condition. I have done the basic trouble shooting and can get spark. But I have a few questions I need some help with. Carb is off and waiting for a good cleaning.
It seems that I can only get spark with the bottom lead of the coil disconnected????
The lock nut of the plunger switch for the brake was on the out side of the bracket but that does not allow the bolt to depress the switch..should the nut be on the inside??
Lastly, is there a safe way to jump start this mower since it has electric start?
Forgot this. I suspect there is an issue with the plunger switch. Can that be changed out/wires pulled like a pigtail or do I need to get the whole assembly with wires and all. Thanks again.

I think after looking at the parts breakdown and some common sense I have just had a "duh" moment with the 8241ae. Was giving the lock nut position on the brake assembly some more thought. I think that the reason for not being able to adjust the nut and screw properly is that the brake assembly itself is not moving when the bail is held to the handle. When the bail is held to the handle the cable moves and the outer spring is compressed, but nothing else moves. Am I correct in thinking that the brake assembly (#84 in diagram link posted previously) should pivot on the vertical bolt? The sequence would be hold bail to handle, cable moves and compresses outer spring that would compress larger inside spring and move brake away from flywheel and allow screw to compress plunger closing the circuit allowing spark and ignition?????

Grrrrrrr. Leads from old battery soldered onto new battery. Positive and negative traced to proper leads on new battery, battery fully charged...BUT when connection is made and key is cycled bendix moves towards starter and not towards flywheel to engage? Swapped Positive and negative leads???? :confused2::confused2:
I am sure this is a goof I have made any help is appreciated. Is it possible that I turned the relay upside down when I put it back in?
