Replacing Briggs and Stratton Engine

I have a Troy-bilt mulching mower that I bought in 1994 and the 4.5 hp B&S engine went out last summer. I've gone to B&S's website to see about a replacement but it seems as though their website directs to local dealers around Atlanta. Is it possible for a homeowner to buy a replacement B&S engine ?

You'll need to find out your crankshaft length and diameter, most likely it's 7/8" x 3 5/32" but you will need to measure it.
Then go to small engine warehouse.com , select Vertical engines, crank length and diameter, most mounting patterns are standard. You can choose from Honda,Kawasaki, Kohler or Briggs.

Is everything on the mower in excellent condition. If not the cost of a new engine is not worth the expense on a 25 year old unit. You’re better off putting that money toward a new unit.

Excellent condition? I've kept everything in good condition over the years. It's a great, simple design for mulching yard clippings. Thing is, we won't be in the house but possibly 2 years and I won't need a mower where we're going next.

Thanks. I'm heading to that site now
