Replace Steering Gear?

Simplicity 1693601. When I turn the steering wheel all the way to the right I am unable to return the wheels to straight. If I turn steering wheel it just clicks and no movement from the front wheels. If I manually turn the front tires to the left the steering will "catch" and turn normally with the steering wheel all the way to the left. Only problem is when I turn all the way to the right. I see there is a steering gear and a gear on the bottom of the steering wheel shaft. Is it advised to replace both? Thank you!

Most times they are worn to the point that if you don’t replace both at the same time you’re being penny wise pound foolish. I would also replace both bushings. Page 34 of this manual will show you the parts, with part numbers. https://www.thepowerportal.com/ipls/ipl.htm?md=1693601~_IPLURL_LO.pdf

Thank you, Rivets. Can the steering gear and pitman arm be removed from below? Looks fairly straightforward. What am I missing?

Yes, you must remove from below, as the gear is part of the shaft.

Does the spring pin at the steering wheel (#3) and the cotter pin (#6) both have to be removed to take out the steering shaft? I have never had good luck getting that spring pin at the steering wheel out on other mowers.

Is it recommended to also replace #21, stop spacer?
