Old Montgomery Wards tiller, 5hp briggs horizontal. Tank mount carb of course. Is there replacement carb to get rid of old slide choke? I find it better to replace than rebuild old carbs now they are so cheap. Except the slide choke styles at 100 bucks plus. So......I want to get rid of this old style. Any ideas? Can it be done without a conversion manifold.

Yep, should have known to post that, sorry....
Shroud....130202 1672 02 8301 0407 .....and that’s all there is. 5hp Briggs. Old Monkey Wards tiller. Motor starts, only gave 50 for it.
Looks like you will need to use the same style carb on your engine. Trying to make a different carb would require changing the tank plus other possible parts. Briggs part number is 299437 and I’ve seen them for under $75. Cost of doing what you are asking would cost double of a brand new carb.

Looks like the 397135 is an option for this 130202-1672-02 engine or at least it is listed in the IPL.

Yep, that’s what I found also. However, that’s the pricey option I was trying to avoid. $60 new, and the kit for the old one is $8. Apparently because of the air cleaner style, bolt in the middle. I won’t be able to use the cheaper $20 carbs rest of Briggs is using. So, on with the rebuild kit. Thought maybe the pros had a magic crossover. Thanks though for the get back.

The main problem is the tank mounting design. They don't come anywhere near matching up. No way either carburetor would interchange as with even an tank adaptor nothing would line up for intake or the linkages.
This is the tank gasket for 397135 and 299437 carburetors.
vs the newer tank gasket use those cheaper
The 397135 carburetor being $60 new is still an aftermarket as my best price from the Briggs distributor is $78.16 plus shc with list of $120.25.
