Hi,
Just joined the website after spending a lot of time lurking and reading. Love all the info and knowledge here! I thought I was ready to pull the trigger on a new mower and the more I read, research, and think, the more unsure I am of which one to get.
I currently have a 2001 Simplicity Regent and the transmission is going so I am looking for a new tractor and have narrowed it down to these two tractors. A local dealer has both in stock and there's financing available as well.
My dilemma is that although I love my Regent and for 13 years have basically had no problems with it. On the other hand, my mother in law purchased a 2008 Regent and it was total junk! I believe it was when Briggs bought them out? Regardless, I vowed to never go back to Simplicity, especially the Regent. Well, in talking with the dealer, he said there was about a 3 year window around that time when he was consistently having to repair them. Since then, he said he noticed that has changed for the better and thinks its due to tighter quality controls. So, he feels the Regent would be a good choice. When I sat on it and drove it, unfortunately it still feels, looks, and reminds me of the junk that my mother in law had. I know it will cut and look great, but is it really a better machine nowadays or the same junk?
When I look at the Husqvarna YT42XLS, I sense a better made machine...with a fab deck. The concern I have is all the discussions in here about the locking differential and how people don't seem to like it. I have a fairly flat yard except for two culvert areas I need to get into and planting beds to go around. It seems like the the general consensus in here is if you don't have a lot of hills or don't plan on plowing snow or other jobs, then that isn't needed and will probably rip up the lawn more. I have also read that some people don't seem to get a good cut with it.
So, theres pros and cons to each and i really cant decide on which one to go with. I apologize for the length of this post but trying to give some background info and hoping to get some thoughts on which one to get.
Thanks in advance!
