I need to purchase a self-propelled mower gas operated. I read so much about mowers in my price range 350-450 and non-seem to be very good. I have an 18 yr old self propelled Briggs Stratton engine from Sears works great but this new one is for my sister. Any help is appreciated.

From what I know, a reel type mower is best for St. Augustine. Also you need to make sure you don't cut it too short. My dad had a McLane reel mower and it was excellent. Unfortunately they would be way above your price range unless you find a good used one.
You will probably need to visit an independent dealer. Lowe’s and probably Home Depot have pretty much gone to battery junk. Honda is out of the mower business.
Ariens is one of the few companies that are still selling walk behind mowers. Look at the Ariens Razor.
You might get lucky and find a Toro.
