Recoil Starter Part Number Identification Problem

Working on a Bolens/MTD Model 11A-B06R765(has a number 421852 under the model # ) s/n 1G253K10481

Mower's recoil came to me in pieces off the mower....I ordered a new starter that came with a "insert" looking piece with a 4 bolt pattern loose. The replacement starter appears to snap into the blower housing from the bottom. When starter blower over is bolted to the flange piece under the flywheel it appears to bind somewhere as if the bolts(3) to the blower housing is missing spacers. I do not see a starter in their website that "snaps" into the blower housing.

I must be missing something in the jigsaw puzzle...thanks in advance,

bartles

By now you should know that you can't just willy nilly order parts. You first must look up the engine using its model and spec number with date code or serial number as manufacture do change things in mid production.

The IPL only shows the general assembly with a few Briggs parts so I assume it has a Briggs engine. But which one?

The blower housing has decal information: "B&S 500E Series"/140cc I could never find a specific model information for just the engine on the engine proper. FYI, I could not find in the MTD website specific mower model differentiation by a specific B & S engine model.
The old starter, in pieces, did not include a separate ring that fit the starter bolt hole pattern. It to looks like it snaps in the blower housing from the inside. There were no washers or spacers that might lift the starter and housing to prevent the binding.

Model number info for the engine is most likely stamped into the side of the engine block on the side opposite the fuel tank and carb.

Sound like 09P6 or 09P7 series so look on the side of the crankcase for the numbers.

Now the rewind may have come with a new starter cup [455A] which need to be used and not the 455. Also that ring [930]may not be used on your version of the engine. Briggs made the change back in Aug 2014.

The engine information is computer dot etched on the flat side section of the engine block; you may need to clean the block really well to see the tiny digits.

I have located numbers that are cast into the engine block, on a flat horizontal surface..."21-140"

That is not the number.

Look at the flat vertical section opposite side of the block from the air cleaner and carburetor. They will be dot etched numbers, not casted.

I really appreciate y'all's experience with this one....I've never seen etching this faint....B&S didn't expect anyone needing to order parts I guess😁

Well guys I got all giddy with the "discovery" of the model number (9P602-0023-F1) info on the block...until I looked at part number 84010941 in the B&S website and saw a four hole bolt pattern on the starter..........the existing arrangement is a three (shoulder) bolt pattern.

I am stuck again, appreciate the help in advance yet again,

bartles

Two different starters were used on that model engine, depending on the manufacturing date. I suggest you do one of two things. Go to an authorized Briggs service dealer and have them contact their distributor for the correct part number or contact Briggs directly through their website. Make sure you have the date code.

Yep, I am a beaten man!:)

Re: Date code..........I noticed in the B&S website date codes with a lot more digits than xx-xx-xx......I suppose a distributer will be able to figure that out.
I did not see in their website a method to contact them directly via email nor by phone. I'll call one of their "Diamond" distributor locations.

I appreciate the advice,

bartles

Try this site. https://www.briggsandstratton.com/au/en_au/support.html
The date code should be listed in the same area as the model and type code

DOM 06-21-13 when convert to the old style is 130621xx. Trim code not present

The issue is they are showing the starter for the use after 140601 but nothing for the before numbers. And the new series starte doesn't fit the old series blowing housing. I suspect the only way to get around it would be to order the starter/blower housing kit.

Locating a part number for a new housing..............it does not come up in the B&S website.

I contacted a regional "Diamond" dealer, provided him the model number and DOM number.........and was sent yet another starter that does not fit.

Where/how can I find the housing and starter combination using my model: 9P602-0023-F1 (DO
M 06-21-13)

That number you posted is for Australia, might want to try the number for Wauwatosa

This may also help understand what is going on. The said in the service bulletin that parts for both are available, but I suspect the previous date code parts have been eliminated in favor of the newer parts.

Goter done......starter 84010941 with flywheel cup 593960 fixed it.

Thanks again to all that pitched in to help,
