Recoil snapping back

Hi everyone,
I have an old Murray walk behind with a Tecumseh OVRM120-22033D engine. It's given me this problem occasionally before but now it's every time I try to start it. It fires once and the cord snaps back really hard. I pulled the flywheel and checked the key, but it's perfectly fine and everything's lined up. Any ideas what else it could be?

I had a Tecumseh on a rear tone tiller that was the same way. It would literally break your hand. I saw it break the handle that is on the string.

Check the valve clearance.
