Recoil on an Old Lawn Boy

Hey, does anyone know of a trick to fixing the recoil on one of these old Lawn boys? I pulled mine apart, and it was a mess inside, but I was able to re-assemble it. But when I pull it, still no recoil.

I can't answer your question... that mower is older than any of mine so I have no experience with that type of starter.

That's a gem of a vintage Lawn-Boy. Thanks for posting the photo. Any additional info/photos (including model number) would be greatly appreciated.

Was the spring damaged? That may be depending on interpretation. It wasn't folded in any way as to leave a crease. BUT is was uncoiled, and it needed to be recoiled. It kinda looked like it jammed. Man, I wish I took a picture before I messed with it. I wish I knew about THIS place before I messed with it, HAHA!

So I connected the hooked end back to it's rightful home, and thats were I didn't know what to do. Do I twist it up to get tension back into it, ot does that happenwhen you pull the rope?

And 2 Stroke, I'll get that info n post it. I don't know it off the top of my head.

If you have never taken one apart, take you're time and remember what you do (very important).
1 pull the rope out of pulley, undo or cut the knot.
2 bend back one of the two tangs (parts that are over the pulley) (you may need to pull back more then one) GRASPING THE PULLER WHICH IS WOUND TIGHT and lift out and remove from the cover, see if the spring is disconnected from ends, if they're are replace.
3 look for any damage or anything that looks out of place and then clean the spring.

INSTALL SPRING
place a dab of grease on pulley (the side that the spring go's) set pulley into housing and bend bumper tang down. TRUN THE PULLEY UNTIL SPRING IS WOUND TIGHT. Then back off pulley one turn until hole in pulley for rope knot and eyelet in blower housing are in alignment.
Spring should be securely locked in smaller portion of tapered hole.
Install rope.
