I was wanting to service the rear drive axle on this mower and can't find an inlet or drain plug.
IS THERE ONE OF EITHER AND IF SO WHERE.
ANY PHOTOS OR A MANUAL APPRECIATED (Either owners or service manual).
Thanks

Re: REAR AXLE LUBRICATION - Craftman 44" 18HP Model 917.254720 AND NEED A MANUAL
Chuck,
I looked at the parts diagram/list online, and Sears is showing that the transaxle is no longer available, thus they did not list the make/model of the tranny..
If you look at the rear of the transaxle housing, you might find the manufacturers tag with the make/model/serial number.
Once you identify the make/model of the transaxle, a search for the service information for it can be undertaken online.
Almost none of them come with drain plugs. Typically (as with the Tuff Torq transaxles that are common to many tractors of this size), changing the oil requires removal of the transaxle from the mower, and draining by turning it over and draining through the fill plug on top (typically under the fan). So nice that they saved $0.25 (according to Tuff Torq) for the option of including drain plugs!

The closest manual that I found was for the 254722, which is two "variants" newer than the 254720... It might have a different transaxle, and other differences in the parts, but if it helps, this is a direct link to the PDF from Sears (this looks like an MTD manual, which generally means that parts availability should be good, even for older machines) : http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/pd_download/lis_pdf/OWNM/L0904455.pdf
