I have a Troy Built push behind, 6hp B&S, purchased from Lowes. Fuel seemed to run out when not in use. No leaks so probably the valve is not closing in the carburetor. Fixed! Put an in-line shut off on the fuel line.

The mower will run, sometimes, after it gets warmed up. Until then, I have to prime it for several minutes. It's sporadic though. Last night I primed it for 10 minutes and it would not stay running unless I was constantly priming the carburator. It's starved for fuel. Any ideas? I have the carburetor apart several times and cleaned all the parts so it's not dirt. Any help is appreciated!

First get us the model number info for the engine so we know what engine and carb you have. If it is the bowl type carb, Most likely the bowl nut jet is partially clogged. If you are sure it isn't a carb problem then move to the intake pipe to see if it is cracked.

The model number of the mower is 12AV 5560711 183621 (6.75HP)

Make sure the float sits level when the carb is upside down, also run a wooden tooth pick inside the jet in the bowl nut, and then blow with carb cleaner and compressed air. Also make sure when you are hitting the primer button that there is gas squirting up inside the carb. The air cleaner housing will warp were it connect the carb, and will prevent proper priming.

Also make sure you have a known good plug. I have seen spark plugs do some weird things. Like run for 5 minutes and then quit for 10 minutes. Or cause uneven running like a surge but not surging.

Thanks for the help! Well, took it all apart again. Shot carb cleaner through the jets. I blew through the gas nipple when the float was down and it seems restricted to me but that may be how it's designed. Carb cleaned that too. Put it back together and it ran only after priming it 4/5 times. So not fixed but useable. I'm in the right area but still not completely fixed. I run cleaner through each tank too. I will check the plug too. I don't think I have ever had it out. My feeling is it's gas and not spark but still does not hurt to check. It seems to work most of the time only after running for several minutes and getting warm.
