PTO mower won't engage when hot

Hello everyone. I have a White Outdoor LT-1850 Yard Machine/MTD lawn tractor. Early 2000's I believe. The problem that I am having is when the outside temp is hot which increases the temp of the mower. If I put it in reverse or intentionally turn off the mower deck it will not start back up right away if at all. I either have to wait a few seconds or let it cool down for a while. It progressively gets worse the hotter it gets.

I know it has to do with the safety features.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

The engine will not start back up, or the PTO will not start back up? We don't understand what you are talking about. Please explain a little more clearly.

Just like the title states. The PTO does not engage the mower deck once it becomes hot. Either from the safety feature from going in reverse or from manually shutting off the mower deck. Im talking about the blades spinning. The tractor itself runs perfect. It's the safety feature that controls the mower deck, spinning of the blades. Once the the temp hits a certain level the mower deck will not engage until it cools down.

AGAIN, IM ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE PTO AND SAFETY FEATURES THAT CONTROL THE MOWER DECK.

Sorry, but you are mistaken. The PTO and the reverse mow safety switches are two different circuits. The reverse mow safety switch shuts down the engine. The PTO switch just controls the clutch. If the clutch shuts down when it gets hot, it is telling you that the heat is causing a short in the magnetic coil.

All I'm getting at is that by pulling on the PTO knob (stated as in the manual) is that the mower deck will not restart once it is hot. Im not arguing about the mechanics of the machine for f@cks sake.

Sorry I guess I can't help you, as you know more than I do. Hope someone smarter than me replies. Shouldn't be hard. Bye.

OMG...Someone offers their knowledge and you are rude/obscene...shame on you...
I rely on forums (volunteers) to offer free knowledge...It's certainly ok to question or disagree, but implied profanity?? Shame on you...

You know Rivets, it is sad when a new member gets testy with a forum expert on there first post.

You know me, I'm a real troublemaker and use to it. Don't know what I said wrong, but the guy never came back to look for an answer, enough though none was given. I think I'm over it.

I have the same problem (not the impatient, rude one) - but a problem with my MTD Yardman 22-Horse, 46 inch cut. The PTO clutch will not start the blades turning when it gets hot, usually after mowing for awhile. We thought it was the voltage regulator as it was kicking out 18 volts instead of about 13.5 but changing the regulator did not stop the PTO clutch from not engaging after the mower is stopped and restarted.

Rivets, if you are reading this I think you may be able to advise me with your knowledge and experience. I believe you mentioned that the electromagnetic clutch may have a short in it??? If this is the case, does the whole clutch have to be replaced or just the part that is cracked (or are they one and the same)?

I appreciate any input you may be able to give me. Also, if I have been unclear I promise I will try to clarify and not fly off the handle. Thank you.

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and today, I'm having kinda the same problem, the blade engage, but for about a minute, then shut off. If I re-engage them, they'll stay on for 20-30 seconds and shut off again. I too have a White LT 1850, and I've only had the tractor a few weeks so it's pretty aggrevating. Please help me... I appreciate your answer, I was wondering if this is also my problem. I will be mowing forward and when I stop to go back the PTO shuts off as it should, but when I go forward again, it does not engage. I would have to take both control sticks and move them away to the rest position and then back to forward and it would start up again until I need to go reverse. Any help? Do i need a new clutch or could there be something in the safety circuit wiring? Is there a wiring diagram for a Troy Bilt rzt 42?

You would need to find the tag on the frame with the model and serial number....

Some new folks here too.
