"Back in the day" of go karts with 5hp briggs racing on dirt everyone used the same green foam sock air filter. Some oiled it and some didn't. When the track was really dry and dusty the oil guys had the filters plug completely covered in a layer of oily dirt. The no oil guys just slapped the filter a few times between races to knock the dust out and raced all day. I worked on and built engines for some of them. Never saw a difference in engine wear or compression.
I install over a hundred air filters a year. If it has a prefilter i don't oil it.
