I have a Poulon Pro 21" 7.0 self-propelled lawn mower, Briggs & Stratton engine, that kicks back like a motorcycle when I pull the cord to start it. It is very hard to start, but eventually will start after I have pulled the starter cord 20+ times.

Before I start taking it apart I would like to have some idea of what I'm looking for and where I'll find it. I have kept current with regular maintenance of my mower.

I know my way around an engine but do not have experience with a lawnmower engine.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would certainly appreciate the assistance.

Thanks,
L4T

First think I would check would be is the, flywheel key offset or sheared. If the key is offset or sheared it will effect timing, which can cause kickback.

As Ilengine says, flywheel key. Has it ever stopped hard whilst using, ie hitting an immovable object?

What's the compression like?
