Ive got a poulan 42" with 18.5 Intek B&S. This spring, I replaced the solenoid when it would not start. Seemed to fix the problem, until three weeks ago. It will not start now, unless I jump the solenoid. I have put in another new solenoid(parts store said it should not be bad again, and I agree). With new solenoid it will not start. I get power from the battery to the solenoid but not out of the solenoid. I can still jump the solenoid and start it, but that is a PITA way to do it if I have to go inside or move something out of the way. I havnt changed the ingnition switch, but have put a new fuse in just to make sure. ANy ideas of where to go next. Thanks for the help in advance.

Please put up you tractor's model numbers.

Does the solenoid have 2 big posts, and 2 small posts? Probably so, which makes running down the problem a little harder, but put up you model numbers, and with
the schematic and a simple test light, you should be able to run down the problem.

It was the ignition switch. just finished changing it out. now i have a new problem. Went on a few test passes with the blades engaged and it starts blowing black smoke from the muffler area and squealing like a champ. Grass was a little high, could that cause the belt to squeal? Black smoke?

The only time this is noticable is when the blades are engaged and they are under a load.

if its coming out the muffler it means its flooding out to much fuel
