This mower has a briggs 18.5 hp 31P777-0299-E1 engine was starting and running good. I shut it down to refuel and now all it will do is click at the solenoid switch. I changed out battery from a running unit even though the battery tested fine over 12 volts. I have checked wire connections and fuse block and all seems to be well. It tried to turn over by jumping the solenoid but would not. Pulled starter off engine and it will spin when hooked to battery cables. Please give me some input on this.

Check the valve clearances, make sure they are .003-.005 for intake and .005-.007 for exhaust. Could also be a sticking compression release mechanism on camshaft, but check the valves first.

can't believe and engine that was running and was shut down to refuel suddenly needs a valve adjustment. It was running fine before shutdown and after it will only click the solenoid and one time it tried to turn the engine the engine turns freely by hand other than when it comes to the compression stroke

I have rechecked the valves and they are correct. I have tried jumping the solenoid and it will not turn over I even tried a new solenoid and have the same result. Please give me some advice as to what to look for next
