I have a Murray riding mower that was given to me by my grandparents 3 years ago (Murrary Mower model # 40504X92). The first year it ran great, last summer I went to start it, didnt work. Had a friend look at it, he checked a bunch of stuff, thought it was was starter, checked it out, the magnets inside the starter was shattered, so i got a new one, installed it, went to start it, nothing happens. He then said the solenoid may have gone bad. So I took it out, replaced it. Still nothing. After that I lost my job and didnt have the funds to send it to a mechanic. So I just used the push mower.

A week ago I decided to give it another run. Since my friend is oversees (deployed in afghan) I got my multimeter out, I have 12v to the top left post of the solenoid, the think red wire from the starter goes to the top right post of the solenoid. The smaller orange wire from the ignition switch goes to the lower flat post, no voltage there. There is also a small red wire from the ignition switch that goes to one of the top solenoid post. I do not know which one. I am ASSUMING, that it goes to the top left to draw voltage, to send to the ignition switch, so once key is turned it send voltage back to the solenoid to activate the starter. I have VISUALLY inspected the safety cutoff switches on the seat, brake, and the blade. When I turn the key the lawn mower starts, however if I take my foot off the brake the mower shuts off. However if i turn the key off IT DOES NOT shut the mower off, heck i even took the wiring harness off the ignition switch and it doesnt even shut off then. I have NO IDEA what the heck is going on or what to do or check next. I have only replaced the solenoid and the starter. I havent changed any wiring.

What do I do, what the heck is going on with my mower? I cant be cutting my entire yard with a push mower again cause my front yard is longer then 2 football fields...

THANKS to everyone in advance.

Sounds really weird, I would check the battery polarity then ensure the new solenoid is correct for the app and wired correctly..regards

agreed, wrong solenoid, clearly a wiring issue.
