Hi all have a lawnmower engine and wanting to change out the rings, seems I can get the rod, piston and rings as a kit more cost effective from B&G, but when I look up the parts there are like 3 "standard" ones to choose from. How the heck do you know which of the 3 standard and the correct one for the engine.

The engine model is 12H802-2677-B1 then there's also a 00042758 at the end.

Also the piston only has 3 rings but what you get in the kit is 4 rings...what the heck??

You must buy the piston and rings per the date code of the engine. This had at least five different piston and ring sets over the years. Plus you also got the choice between Standard and .020 oversize sets.

The 00042758 is the date code. which translates to YYMMDD58 with last two being the factory code. So 00 is year 2000.

Thank...I was going to buy the whole assembly as its $55 I believe that to be 590406??

590406 is not even one listed for the OP's engine.

This what I found on the B&S parts website

Completely than the dealer support site. Now which to believe. Just appears to a crap shoot now.

Even get on this on Briggs eParts on the dealer site.

thanks startech...where to go from here...is there aphine number to call briggs and ask them?

Also 791097 looks right it does not have the rod with it, where as 590406 has the piston, rings and rod...now is that truly a fit...no idea

anybody else has any insight?

Looks like the 590406 is a complete piston/ring assembly with included connecting rod. As opposed to just the piston/ring assembly. So you are both correct.
