PICS! The Kerry-All RER cover.....

Here it is!

This is the Kerry-all cover I got from Lloyd (Kerryall). It's especially designed for RER's. It isn't as snug-fitting as I'd prefer, but it will do the job of keeping rain off the mower, and UV rays off the seat.

It's so thick, it stands all by itself! (see pic) Very heavy material, and that makes it a lot easier to put on and take off, because you aren't fighting with it. There are vents in it, but they are really not needeed, due to the weight of the thing. Besides, there are eyelets all around the bottom of it so you can fasten it down with a bungee. I suggested doing away with the vents. They are just critter doors.

Not sure of the final price of this beastie, but it'll work! Designed for a Snapper, but I'd bet it'll fit almost any RER.

If you are doing a restoration and don't have a barn or shed, this is a MUST-HAVE! It'll make sure that resto lasts.

Wish I had it during the monsoon season!

I know this sounds like an ad - but it's not. That'd be really hypocritical of me.

Lloyd posted the question about a cover, I was going to chew him out about advertising, but he was quite open to designing something that suited we mower types. I gave him measurements and ideas, and he had it made, and shipoped me one, with the agreement that I'd post pics and my thoughts on it.

So, I did! I got what you see out of the deal, and if none sell, sorry to Lloyd. If he sells a million, I don't get anything more - so, I'm not advertising for him. Just letting you know what I think about this cover!

I will be working out a retail price soon. Instead of the grommets along the bottom, I going to use webbing loops (kind of like belt loops with 1" webbing, very strong) - this will keep the cost quite a bit cheaper (grommets aren't cheap and labor-intensive to install).
With more exact measurements, we can make a tighter fitting cover. Also, someone asked a while back about a bottom for the cover, for outdoor storage on a longer term. I think that is feasible (at a higher cost). Think of a shoebox. The cover you see in Todd's pics is the main part of the box (upside down). The shoebox 'cover' would sit on the ground with about a 4" high side. It would have Velcro on the top edge of that 4". Drive the mower onto it, then pull the main part of the 'box' over the mower. It would have Velcro on the inside, about 4" up from the bottom to fasten to the other Velcro.
This way, rain would run off the cover onto the ground, and not into the bottom if was placed on the outside.
Confused? Would anyone buy one, if the price is right?

Well, at the risk of promoting desperately needed commerce here in North America, I'd probably buy one if it came in at about $200.00 or less. I think for those folks who have the unusual circumstance of owning a mower worth protecting and not having a great indoor place to store it, it would sure beat the ubiquitous blue tarp...:wink:

for $50 ....id buy on or two

#6

I'm going to try and get the price as close to $50 as I can... that would be the version without the bottom, though. I'll have to see how hard I can push the guy with the sewing machine!

this may sound a little weird ..........but what about pockets on the bottom inside edge where you can put weights like river rock or something?

#8

KerryAll

KerryAll

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Some may not want that, but I think we could offer it as an option, for only a couple dollars more... I'm open to all kinds of ideas, except giving them away for free! Hmm, that's not to stay if I do a small production run, I might raffle one off to forum posters, if there's a few out there who might be interested...

Okay, here's where I need your help. Can you send me the make and model of your ride-on, with dimensions- length, width and height. Be as accurate as possible, allow about 1" extra on the three measurements.
I'll tabulate and try to come up with a common size that will fit as many makes as possible. That way I can keep the price down by making one batch at a time (this is only a part-time business at the moment; I'm a one man shop with the sewing help of a two man shop).

If a one-size-fits-many doesn't work, Ill determine my retail price on a one-off basis (not as cheap to do).

Thanks for your help.

another idea is like my motorcycle covers.....they have elastic on the front and back to wrap under the wheels............who are you asking for dimensions?

#11

KerryAll

KerryAll

Hey, red,
Good point on the elastic. I think my plastic is a little stiff for that, but I'll keep it in mind if I happen to move to a softer material in the future.
Measurements? Anyone who has a ride-on (I see you have a bunch), even if they aren't interested in a cover, I'd love to get a good range of makes and models to determine what sizes to make.

#12

reddragon

reddragon

well i went out measured and they're all practically identical......37" front track......38" rear track.....70" long......40" tall at steering wheel...then the deck....42" without discharge chute.....but it can be folded up....[it seems to be the biggest fitment problem] .. also i have bagger set ups on a couple and thats a whole 'nother story...

#13

KerryAll

KerryAll

Thanks for those measurements- I'll keep your other points in mind as well. Keep 'em coming, folks!

Hey, red- do you think a cover 43" wide overall (to add 1" to the width of the deck) would be too sloppy? To custom fit so it's snugger would be quite a bit more sewing...

#15

reddragon

reddragon

its doable...if the anchoring set up can pull in the slack parts....that might work....is square easier for you than say a diamond type shape?

#16

KerryAll

KerryAll

I think a diamond or wedge shape would be okay, it's just things like a small 'bulge' to allow for an odd piece, like the discharge that gets complicated. Can you do a rough sketch with dimensions and send it to me? That would make sure we're on the same page.

ok...i took some pictures with the tape measure in the shot....38-39" would give wiggle room around the tires......as you can see the hoods are different shapes [ and different heights]....id sew it for a taller hood to make sure..........the discharge chutes vary... the MTD [red] chute actually folds backwards [away from 90 degrees].....the craftsman [green] folds strait up [and no further]..............as for the hoods...i took the measurement strait up from the front of the steer tires on both photos...the craftsman has the longer hood.[ but surprisingly not as tall as the MTD]...i would go with the craftsman measurement [ it should cover most mower sizes]....after doing this..i see more of an oval shape coming into play....tell me if you need any more info ...

Oval shape? As in wider in the middle than the front and rear (sorta coffin-shaped)?

#19

reddragon

reddragon

yeah....thats it...i know the less seams you make the cheaper you can sell them.....tell me some of the cuts your thinking about....im curious how you put them together....are these polyethylene tarpaulin material?

#20

KerryAll

KerryAll

I'll do up a sketch in the morning and post it on here. The material is a heavy woven poly, similar to the blue and orange tarps you see everywhere (that deteriorate in about one season outside), but much heavier. It's also treated with an ultraviolet inhibitor for long life outside. The plastic supplier tells me they'll easily last outside for 15 years (they use them a lot for covers on hay storage buildings).

I think we could take a piece about 32" high that would be the four sides, and a top piece in that diamond or oval shape we discussed. Fold the four sides into a rectangle and sew on the top piece. That's a bit simplistic, but the process in a nutshell. Then add the webbing 'belt loops' to the bottom edge of 4 sides to secure the cover.

Something like this?

#22

reddragon

reddragon

yes....i just spent 10 minutes measuring....and i think 24" up front for width.....42" in the middle and 36" for the rear...would be work great....keeping the 32" high and 72" long measurements .........your diagram measurements would be more for the bigger gt5000 size of tractors..

#23

i dont know what scraps you'll have left over from this....but you might be able to use them for a push mower cover?

We always have small pieces kicking around we could stitch together for a push mower cover. Want to get that tape measure out again?
I'm going to take this drawing to my shop guy, see what price we can get it to retail for; I may go out on a limb and get half a dozen made, and hope for the best!

A push mower cover like this (sorry, it's a bit rough) ?

#27

reddragon

probably!.....i was thinking since most push types have fold up handles ..you could make a smaller one ....but second thought ...nobody would actually do that.....those handles will use a bit of material!

#28

KerryAll

KerryAll

Probably less than 20 sq.ft. using rough guesses on dimensions. I'll check my own mower tomorrow and get an idea. I'll take both drawings (the ride-on as well) to the shop, and try and get prices soon.

The price is here! for the Kerry-All ride-on mower cover.....

reddragon sent me some measurements (I guess he can tell you the make and model), but it's 72" long, 36" wide at the rear and 24" wide at the front, plus 42" wide on the middle to fit the deck.
The retail is $69.95 plus shipping (about $15 to most US/Canada destinations).
If I had a few orders, say half a dozen, I think I can get that cost down to $55.

Hi, Shayne,
I'm getting ready to make the prototype (had a couple of rush orders for a trade show in Florida), but now that I look at the pics you posted, I'm wondering about the height of my prototype. The height to the top of the hood is about 32", which is what I was going to make the cover, but the top of the steering wheel must be about 42" ?

#32

reddragon

reddragon

yes...more like 40" at the steering wheel....are you looking at changing the cuts??

#33

KerryAll

KerryAll

Well, originally, we looked at making the cover 32" high, but if we did, when it sat on the top of the steering wheel, it wouldn't cover the tires. Now, whether or not it should go up to 40" at the s/wheel and 32" for the rest, we could look at that. I also need a measurement where the width flares out to 48". Can you see the pic under my pics? I tried to include it in the earlier message, but it wouldn't go.
What are your thoughts?

#35

But at 32" for the height, won't the steering wheel pull it up and leave a gap between the bottom of the cover and the ground?

Hi,wj,
It's going well. reddragon and I are finalizing measurements to make a cover for a regular ride-on. Twall has a prototype I sent him for a RER Snapper, I think it is. The pics are on this thread earlier.
A work in progress, I am!

#38

reddragon

reddragon

well.....with the wider measurement in the center the bottom edge shoud sit pretty level all the way around.......thats why i changed them......i compensated for the top section to drape over all the parts without making an uneven bottom edge:smile:

#39

reddragon

reddragon

maybe you can mock up a prototype with an old blanket or something to those specs to see how it would hang:rolleyes:

#40

KerryAll

KerryAll

That's a good idea. I'll try that, if I can't get it to work, I'll go with our original drawing (your measurements) and give the prototype a whirl.
