I've got an old b and q petrol mower (fplmp99) and the cord keeps getting snagged and ripped because the small brass part that the cord rubs on when its getting pulled has been damaged. Has anyone got any idea what this small part is called and where I could get one or, maybe suggest an alternative that I could make myself?

You will most likely have to purchase an entire starter assembly, as that brass grommet is normally not sold separately. Go to a couple of the repair shops in your area and see if they have any used ones in their scrap yards. Another possibility is to have a small machine shop fabricate one for you, but that could cost you even more.
