We are thinking its finally time to repaint our from porch area and we know its wood but we can not figure out what type. I have never had to paint wood before and I am wondering if it makes a difference the type of paint used?

Use good quality exterior latex. I recommend Sherwin Williams Duration. Be sure to clean porch of dirt and peeling old paint before applying new paint. A pressure sprayer works well for that task.

If its not pressure treated wood, latex is best. Do a VERY good job of cleaning the dirt and loose paint off using a power washer, and when the surface is dry, go over the entire area with a pad sander to scuff up the old paint, which will give the new coating a good bite. Use a power blower to remove any dust. Be sure to use the correct primer to cover any bare spots. What I do, I prime bare spots, let them dry, cover the primed areas with a coat of new paint, and after the touched up areas are dry I go over the entire area with new paint.
Pay the money for good quality paint, not the cheaper stuff. The old adage about getting what you pay for really applies to this, considering how much prep work goes into a repaint job it's foolish to try to save a few dollars.
