Onan throttle slipping

The throttle cable on my Onan engine was rusty on both ends, making it hard to raise or lower the throttle, so I sprayed the ends with WD-40. Now, every time I set the throttle at a higher RPM, it gradually slips down back to the idle position.

I'm starting to think using WD-40 was a bad move....

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Without actually seeing what your throttle arrangement looks like, there is no way I can guide you. Any pictures available? Is it a solid wire cable or a braided cable? Are the pivot points for the throttle lever end and the engine mount pivot worn? We need more information.

It's on a Toro Wheel Horse 244-5. It appears to be a braided cable, with a black sleeve over it.
