Older B&S 5HP Governor .... HELP!

HI- first post here. I've kept my small engines running for decades, but my brain can't seem to wrap itself around governors. I've looked at every youtube video I could find and can't seem to find what I need.

I bought an older Craftsman tiller that has a B&S 5hp motor (130202 0685-02). I had to take the carb off to rebuild it and it is mounted on top of the gas tank. The governor linkage is hidden between the gas tank and the pull-starter housing so I didn't get any photos of the linkage before I removed the carb/tank.

My problem is with the spring that links the governor arm and the bell crank connected to the throttle cable. I "modified" the old spring that was in there trying to make it work (no luck), so I bought a new spring that is the part number listed in the parts diagram, but it seems way too long.

From what I understand, when working as designed the carb wants to run wide open and the governor is set to pull back as the revs pick up and prevent over-revving. Correct? Without the spring there is no connection between the throttle cable and the carb- the governor linkage does that. I have the long rod connected that runs from the governor arm up to the carb butterfly. From some of the videos they showed bending the bell crank arm slightly to adjust the spring tension and set the rev limit?

I'll post some photos with the starter cover removed- tough to see in there, but I think the spring connects the governor arm to one of the bell crank arms? Am I anywhere close? Many thanks!

Wrong spring 796260 is what you need. Move the throttle control and watch the arm that moves and hook the spring in it and then to the governor arm on the engine.

Thank you! That looks more like it. I ordered one and will report back after I get it in.

I would pull the tank and carb. Hit the tank with rust converter, primer then paint externally. Internally do the motorcycle cream liners to seal it up. Keep the carb clean. Getting at those parts and many more for that excellent engine are no longer made. Same for the muffler, converter, prime and high temp paint.

hlw49- Spring arrived and I finally got it on yesterday. A bit of good weather up here in the Great Lakes so I fired it up today and tilled a few passes in the garden. Worked great, steady as a rock! Thanks again.
