Hello all, I'm JJFlappy and I tinker with small engines and electrical equipment for friends and neighbors from time to time as a hobby and I am in need of some advice on this newest little project that was dropped off for me to fix today. It's an older model Toro 21 inch walk behind Lawn Mower. The guy bought it cheap at a garage sale or something and it was an "as is" type purchase. He got it home and gassed it up and tried and tried to start it, but it never even came close. I tried a few things and I couldn't get it to start either. It's getting gas and air, but it doesn't seem to be getting spark. I took it apart and found that it has an ignition coil that I am unfamiliar with. I think it's a magneto. The flywheel has what looks like 2 magnets on it. One is cylindrical in shape and the other is rectangular and they are on opposite sides of the flywheel. The pick-up coil is sort of cone shaped with a rectangular nose that is made up of metal plates and it sits very close to where the two magnets pass. The cone shape is a dark gray plastic and it has lettering on it that I can still sort of read. I think it says 1308 GRAY KEY, but I'm not positive about that number. It may have said T 308 at one time. Anyway, I'm working on this for free as I do with most of the projects that come through, so I try not to get too involved if it looks like it will cost a bunch of money to fix. Is there a way that I can test this coil thing to see if it is still working properly? Thank you for any help.
