I recently purchased a vintage Sears shredder bagger with a 3.5 hp engine that has no spark. I have access to a 5hp briggs from a lawnmower and was just wondering if I'd be able to use it on the shredder? Not sure if the shredder uses a different style engine or if any vertical shaft engine would work. Also, exactly how old is this thing? Any help appreciated.

The shredder bagger is model # 917.270040

Any should work with the same shaft size but just be careful and make sure the impellar is good.

I have a 1971 Sears shredder with a 3.5HP Tecumseh motor which still runs great. This motor has points and the coils are known to go bad. Tecumseh has gone bankrupt so finding another coil is next to impossible. I looked at adding a bigger engine and while the shaft and bolt pattern matched it would not fit the shredder. The Tecumseh motor has the carb and exhaust on the same side of the motor. It has to be this way because the shredder housing on the other side does not allow enough room for anything like a carb or exhaust. Good luck.
