Old old craftsman that brake/clutch does not engage properly

I have a Craftsman LT1036 that up until now runs good. Yesterday after my son was mowing with it for about an hour, the clutch/brake pedal does not engage so that when you put it in gear, the mower does not move. If you take your foot and pull the pedal towards you then it moves. So it still runs and mows if you want to pull the pedal back with your foot while mowing!! Any suggestions to fix this?

I'll put my money on one of two things to be looked at. You are not getting enough tension on the drive belt. Either the drive belt is worn or the idler tensioner arm is not moving freely. You will have to pull the deck and crawl under to check. If the drive belt has not been replaced in the last three years I would get a new one. Also make sure that the tensioner arm is moving very freely. Also, check that the idler pulleys are not worn, if they are replace.
