Have a motor built in 1971, was using on a snowblower. i have the engine completely tore down on the outside, head is removed to clean carbon deposits. I was trying to research the engine and i think it has some kinda of plated aluminum bore but im not 100%. doesn't look like there is any sleeve to me.

i have a book that very briefly goes over this and it says not to 'deglaze' aluminum bores.

i turned the engine crankshaft to get a look at the bore surface and there appears to be some vertical scuffs, i briefly rubbed my finger over them and didn't feel anything but maybe i did that wrong.

i did a quick compression test before taking the motor apart and got 60ish PSI, but that could have been carbon around the valves causing that.

but long story short, should i be replacing the rings? or the piston? or doing a light rehone on it? id like this motor to last alot longer, and im not sure what happens when the rings wear out but i assume it screws the bore up, im assuming thats why there is starting to be some scratches on it, so if i replaced the rings now would that prevent any future damage to the bore? im just not sure how to proceed from here, especially because of the suspected 'plated' bore and the recommended 'do not deglaze' part, makes it super confusing what to do.

ive already checked valve clearance which is within spec's, but plan to take the valves out to lap them and clean the holes up. already checked point gap which was good as well. the breather was making a funny noise, maybe its supposed to? but i think i need to take it apart and clean it up. i think it needs a new filter inside it but not sure what to use for that, a new breather is like $60 from briggs which is just straight crazy talk.....

and i assume i can't reuse the gaskets, so considering making them except for the head gasket which apparently has to be metal. It was leaking gas from the carb, the float looks good, someone suggested its the valve thing on the float and seat. anyways just tryin to get this motor in best shape i can. hopin for some advice
