hello Im new to this site and would like any help I can get on this . I just bought this riding mower its a signature 2000 with a 14.5 briggs ohv i/c engine the guy I bought it from told me he was mowing along and with no warning it puffed white smoke and he saw oil coming from the breather so he put it away and never messed with it again i took it home checked the oil and it seemed very thin so I smelled it it smelled like Gas , I pulled the plug , it was wet with oil ,I turned the engine over while the plug was out and it blew a bunch of oil out it also smelled of gas , my question is should I drain the oil change the plug fill it with gas and try to start this mower or is that a waste of money or does this sound like rings , should I just find another engine and slap on there or does this sound like its fixable ? thanks for any help , Peeps

Since the previous owner put it away pronto there is a relatively good chance the engine is OK. I would recommend draining the contaminated oil, but before re-filling it, correct the problem of the needle valve in the carburetor not controlling the gasoline level in the bowl. That's probably where the problem commenced. Also when not in use I like to see a fuel shut off valve installed in the fuel line.
