OHV Briggs engine loses power

I recently replaced rods and adjusted valves and mower would run normal for few minutes and then will lose power and start smoking. Not sure what causes that? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Prior to adjusting valves carb was also taken apart and cleaned so not sure if that's the problem ??

It would help if you told us the size of the engine with model and serial numbers. We don’t know if you are talking about a 3.5 hp tiller engine or a 20 hp tractor engine. Best guess if the smoke is black you have a carb problem, engine running too rich.
